bold and colourful summer accents

For a lot of people (including myself) bright colours are often hard to commit to in a home! I’m all for neutrals (have you seen my apartment?!) however I am a firm believer that having fun colourful accents is key to finishing off a room. For neutral lovers trying to venture into the colour world, one of the easiest places to start incorporating bolder shades is on your patio! I recently did a segment on the Marilyn Denis show all about fun, new colourful outdoor furniture & accessories. Take a look to see some of my favouirte pieces coming out and where I suggest using them.

Muskoka Chairs, Navy Umbrella, White side table and Toss Cushions from PC Home (available at Real Canadian Superstore). Grey outdoor furniture set (sofa, 2 club chairs and ottoman), outdoor rug, mint side table, wood tray, faux flowers from HomeSense. String Lighting from Canadian Tire.

For the show, I put together 3 different outdoor vignettes. One for a small scale balcony, a second for a medium sized space and lastly, a room set for a large backyard.

The first scene was all about an outdoor eating area. The turquoise Bistro set is a new take on a classic Parisian bistro table, available at PC Home (check out realcanadiansuperstore.ca to find a store near you). This set is ideal for a small scale balcony or small back patio. The bright colour will make any small space feel bigger and it’s perforated back detail makes the whole unit look lighter and less clunky. Personally, when working with a small space I tend to choose a small scale patio set like this one over a single lounge chair. As long as the bistro set is comfy enough, you can use it to relax in but also have the added bonus of being able to eat meals outside or even bring your laptop out to create an outdoor office! The chairs are incredibly comfortable (seriously!) and I could imagine myself spending hours here with a cup of tea and book on my condo balcony.

The medium size vignette was all about summer lounging! I love Muskoka chairs. They are such a trademark summer staple for me. Plus, they are really comfortable, especially when you have a lumbar toss cushion! This whole scene was also all from PC Home. The Muskoka chairs look sleek and contemporary. With only 4 slates along the back (as opposed to 7 which is more typical) the whole piece looks cleaner. And just to top the whole thing off – they are collapsible! Winter storage has never been easier! Fold the chairs up and store them in the garage or covered underneath your deck.

For this space I paired the two chairs with a genius white tray table. The top of the table is a usable tray that you can remove, load up inside, and then bring all your goodies outdoors. To provide a little protection from the sun, we have a Navy umbrella that can tilt and move with the sun throughout the day.

Last but certainly not least is the larger outdoor scene – with a fabulous outdoor lounge set! The grey patio lounge set is from HomeSense and comes with a large sofa, 2 club chairs and the square ottoman. Covered in a fabric called ‘Tex’, this set is completely outdoor friendly and resistant to fading from the sun. Just like many do when furnishing an interior, here we have our larger pieces in a neutral (that you won’t grow tierd of over the years) and had fun with colourful accents that are easier to switch up every 2 or 3 years without breaking the bank. Since the sofa set was dark and plain, we spiced up the whole space with colourful accents. Starting with the rug!

The indoor/outdoor rug is from HomeSense and gave us a large palette of colours to chose from. I pulled out the oranges and blues in the toss cushions (from PC Home). A mint side table (from HomeSense) is tucked beside a club chair as an extra space to place things down. The open base of the side table helps the space flow by not adding much visual weight to the area.

Here’s a close up of some of the pillows. They are new from PC’s spring/summer collection. Note that these pillows are great to bring outdoors for summer entertaining, but they should be taken in when not being used, especially in bad weather.

The bar cart is also from HomeSense. It is a perfect piece of furniture to incorporate outside if you have the space! And remember that you don’t always have to use it as a bar. You can place this cart by a back kitchen door and grow herbs or fill it with planters. The options are endless.

One last thing I have to mention is Outdoor Lighting! Whether you are throwing an outdoor dinner party or lounging reading a book, you don’t want to have to move inside when the sun goes down. By incorporating outdoor lights into your space you can keep a party going! I love these String lights from Canadian Tire’s Canvas line. They are a modern take on vintage Edison lights and can be strung along a fence or over a seating area.

Go bold and have fun with colour on your patio this summer!
